Whether you are new to vaping cannabis oil or a pro, we’ve got six tips to help you find the perfect vape, and how to use your vape pen for maximum use.

According to Headset, in 2020 and 2021 cannabis vape pens were the second-largest category by revenue behind flower in the U.S. cannabis market. If you’ve ever tried The Clear’s cartridges or vape pens, then you know how delicious, potent, and discreet they are.

You may also know that it takes a little trial and error when vaping cannabis oil to find what you like and what works best for you. Luckily, whether you are new to cannabis or a longtime member of the cannabis community, we’ve got some tips to help you find the perfect vape, and to help you store it for maximum use.

How do cannabis oil vape pens work?

Cannabis oil vape pens work by heating the oil just enough to create vapor without burning or combusting the oil. Once you inhale the vapor, the cannabinoids are absorbed into the bloodstream and the effects are felt shortly after.

Different cannabis concentrates, such as wax, shatter, live resin, or distillate can be vaporized and each have an ideal temperature range for vaporization. This article will focus specifically on high potency THC and CBD distillate, and on live resin oils, both of which are commonly found in disposable vape pens and cannabis cartridges.

Vape cartridges and vape pens

Here is our #1 tip: Only buy top-quality cannabis vape cartridges and vape pens from legally licensed dispensaries or delivery services!

Counterfeit cartridges or vape pens can be identified by looking for the license number of the manufacturer on the label. The license number may look different from state to state, but it can be used to search your states database of cannabis producers and prove that the product comes from a licensed entity. This in turn assures the product is legal, tested, and safe for consumption.

Vape cartridges are composed of several key components that make them work. The most visible component is the pre-filled reservoirs, usually made of glass, that contain the cannabis oil. The standard sizes for these reservoirs contain either a half-gram or one-gram of oil, but some reservoirs may contain as much as 2 grams of oil!

An atomizer is the wire coil covered in ceramic in a cartridge responsible for heating the cannabis oil and converting the oil into a vapor. The ceramic covering helps distribute the heat and prevents the oil from making direct contact with the heated coil. The cartridge and atomizer are most commonly connected to a 510 thread at the bottom of the unit.

The Clear cartridges and vape pens use medical-grade ceramic atomizers that provide low failure rates, wider compatibility, even draw distribution, no burning taste, and more vapor delivered per draw. They are crafted with state-of-the-art CCELL and Cilicon hardware, technologies of the highest industry standards.

Cartridges do not come with batteries; you must purchase them separately. However, vape pens have pre-filled tanks that do come with attached batteries. This is why disposable vape pens are called All-In-One (AIO) vapes because they come ready to vape out of the package.

Most cartridges (including The Clear cartridges) use a 510 thread – the most common style –that attaches or screws into 510 thread batteries. However, some carts are uniquely designed for specific non-standard batteries, so always be sure to check with your budtender on what kind of battery your cartridge will need. The batteries for both cartridges and disposable vape pens heat the atomizer in the cartridge or tank.

The best vape pen batteries are Lithium-ion batteries, which are the type of batteries The Clear uses for cartridges and AIO vape pens. This is because they have high energy density and can handle the energy requirements of medium to high temperature vaping.

#2 Tip: Store your vape pen with a battery in a cool, dry, and ventilated place, and avoid storage at high temperatures or in freezing temperatures. This will help to extend the battery life and avoid underperformance.

Best temperatures and voltage to vape cannabis oil

To vape cannabis concentrates, they must reach the minimum temperature to vaporize – the boiling point. Temperature determines the flavor, effects, and vapor density of the concentrate. CBD oil boils at a higher temperature than THC oil, so vaping a high CBD oil may require a higher temperature for best performance.

Vape pen batteries come in a range of voltage settings, usually between 3.0v to 4.8v. The right voltage to heat the vaporizer to optimal temperatures, which range from 280°F to 350°F, depends on the resistance from the atomizer in a cartridge. As a general rule, increasing the voltage setting will increase the vaporizer temperature.

#3 Tip: Start vaping at lower temperatures and work your way up over time.

Low temperature vaping

There are a few reasons to keep your vape battery on a low setting. If you’re new to vaping cannabis oil, a low-temperature setting will produce less vapor, reducing the effects per hit. Remember, you can always take another hit if you want stronger effects!

If you are an experienced daily consumer, try vaping at low temperatures in the morning or daytime to help you stay balanced but functional. Not only will it probably taste better, but it will also help the vape to last longer. Here are some other things to know for low-temperature vaping when using The Clear vape pen battery:

  1. If you want to work through a clog or warm the oil to get it ready for a great first hit, a pre-heat mode is a good low-temperature setting. On The Clear dual voltage button battery, after turning it on, click the button two times to go into pre-heat mode at 1.8 volts.
  2. Click the button on the battery three more times to change between the various voltages. A white button on the battery means it’s at  3.0 volts. This low setting will offer a purer vapor with more terpenes but a lighter hit or smaller plume of vapor.

#4 Tip: The type of oils that may be best for low voltage settings are full or broad spectrum, such as the ENDO live resin and distillate blend, or  THC:CBD oil like Classic because they tend to be higher in terpenes.

How can you tell if a low setting is best? If you can watch an air bubble flow through the oil by turning it upside down, then you DO NOT need a higher heat setting. If the bubble does not move, consider a higher heat.

Medium to high temperature vaping

If you’d like the effects of your cannabis oil to be more prominent with larger plumes of smoke, we recommend vaping at a medium to high temperature. A medium temperature offers plenty of terpenes but with more activated cannabinoids than lower temps.

Vaping at a high temperature of 900°F or more is not recommended as it results in a harsh, burnt vapor and potentially releases harmful chemicals. You can avoid this and stay at a medium temperature with a battery voltage setting between 3v to 4v.

The Clear dual voltage battery offers a 3.6 volt high setting. Click the button three times (the light will turn yellow). This is great if you want to get a larger hit because the additional heat vaporizes more of the cannabinoids and flavorings.

#5 Tip: The type of oil that may be best for medium to high voltage settings is THC distillate like The Clear Elite oil.

How to store your vape pen

As mentioned in the #2 tip, store your vape pen in cool, ventilated places and avoid extreme heat or cold. You should also avoid storing the battery near heating equipment or exposing it to direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Also, ensure that the apertures in your cartridge (the small holes that intake the oil) are all covered with oil at all times. If you notice that they are not, set your vaporizer on a flat surface with the mouthpiece facing upwards until the oil settles to the bottom of the cartridge. The Clear Potstickers are great accessories that fit snuggly around your battery and come with a magnet so you can easily keep your pen upright and protected if it happens to be dropped.

#6 Tip: Store your vape pen in a child-safe, dark, cool area, and an upright position with the mouthpiece up. Consider storing it in a lockbox if you need to keep it out of reach from children.

Bottom Line

Remember to buy your cartridge or vape pen from a licensed dispensary to make sure it is not counterfeit and is tested and safe. Start with a low voltage temperature setting and small hits and work your way up depending on the intensity of the effects that you want and the type of oil you are vaporizing. Lastly, store your vape pen safely and properly so you get the most out of your device and oil.
